So I read through this and this guy nailed it. And pin pointed one of the reasons why I'm working where I currently am.
I'd also add to this article that where the large corporate companies tend to also beat a dead horse longer than a smaller company. By that I mean that many projects are started and never see the light of day.
If you're Microsoft then you might be working on one of these dead horse projects for a few years and then get laid off without a published project to show for your efforts for the last few years. If you were just starting out, and that was your first project then your portfolio would be in pretty poor shape. Especially if your job was something menial like placing rocks in levels.
Smaller companies tend to avoid these monolithic 5 year 15 million dollar projects. They also cant afford to hire 300 people then lay them off three months later, something that many of the large studios tend to do more often than publish a triple A title.
Once you get hired at a smaller studio they're hiring *you* specifically. They're not simply filling a seat like the publishers.

FAQ #9: Can I just take deviantART submissions and use them elsewhere?
It's good to see another mechanical artist here--namely, you. A lot of the mecha fanart elsewhere doesn't appeal much to me, but seeing your works caught my attention and reassured me that there are still people who enjoy making original designs.
So, I'm gonna watch you now.
